Elvis Perkins: Ash Wednesday

Have you ever wanted to be a film star? Do you wonder what it must be like to have famous parents? Do you think you'd enjoy being recognized on the street, like Madonna's kids? Having famous parents probably isn't always a good thing, but it can also be a chance.

Hollywood star Anthony Perkins, who became famous in Alfred Hitchcock's film "Psycho" in 1960, married actress/photographer Berinthia Berenson in 1973. They had two children, Osgood and Elvis. Because they worked in films, Anthony and Berinthia moved from New York to Hollywood.

The younger son, Elvis, became a musician. Not many people know that his father, Anthony, was a musician too. Anthony and Berinthia supported their creative son. Elvis learned to play piano and saxophone but was most interested in playing guitar.

Elvis felt a little disconnected in the artificial world of Hollywood. University and several jobs couldn't satisfy him. He was writing songs and living for his music. Anthony died of Aids when Elvis was still really young. Berinthia died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Elvis found himself searching for peace in his music.

He moved to New York, where he finally felt closer to real life. He also found creative people who inspired him. Elvis started the band Dearland and has now released his debut album, "Ash Wednesday", which is dedicated to his mother - inside, you'll find the words "For Berry".

The album has wonderful melodies and lyrics. The song 'While You Were Sleeping' is the first of 11 beautiful songs about the positive and negative feelings you might have if you experienced the things Elvis has experienced.

The album has two parts: the first part is tragic, the second is more like the relief after suffering for a long time. Elvis says, living in New York, he doesn't feel disconnected any more. He puts all his feelings and energy into his music, which he calls "folk'n'roll".

If you see Elvis play live, you'll probably melt at the smoothness and power of songs like 'Sleep Sandwich' or 'Good Friday'. Check him out, go to the concerts and listen to his wonderful music!
